For Your Listening Pleasure: Mikal Cronin ‘MKII’

We had the pleasure of checking out Mikal Cronin and his band at the 2013 FYF Fest this weekend. After getting funky to their enormous live set, we can’t stop listening to the latest record from Mikal Cronin, titled MCII, which has a great live vibe to it.  Songs like “Change” and “Weight” put us back on the festival grounds, center stage amid a sea of concertgoers, as the guitars bellow out massive, driving rock chords, the drums shake the ground beneath you, and the catchy 80s and 90s indie style pop melodies turn you into a backing vocalist for the day.

Check out music from MKII below, and check out this NPR edition of World Cafe, where Cronin sits down to chat with host David Dye and play a few songs with his band live in the studio.

Concert dates to be posted here http://mikalcronin.bandcamp.com/ with an upcoming concert at The Fillmore in San Francisco, September 2, 2013.

The Band — Up On Cripple Creek

Listen to it. It’s ahead of it’s time. It’s funk-tastic. The funky clav sounds, the ghost notes on the snare, for the drummers out there, are just right. That is all, enjoy your Saturday night, and if you’re partying, party hard.

Funky,

Cold War Kids New Tunage – Dear Miss Lonelyhearts

New album from Cold War Kids posted on Spotify today.  Dear Miss Lonelyhearts, the band’s first release since their 2010 compilation Mine Is Yours, has a nice mix of rhythmic energy, reverb saturated guitar riffs, and of course the chamber style vocals of Nathan Whillett .  “Miracle Mile” gets the album rolling with punchy drums and driving keys, and “Bottled Affection” combines classic Cold War Kids sounds with a modern pop style beat.  We dig.

We first discovered the Cold War Kids via Robbers & Cowards in 2007, by way of the eclectic guitar and vocal melodies in the hit single “Hang Me Up To Dry“.

Keep it funky,

Hendrix Sample Hip Hop Loop (We’ve Got To Live Together)

cd-cover_jimifillmoreIn the midst of a Hendrix jam out sesh the other night I stumbled upon the album Live at The Fillmore East.  Within this album is a tasty little jam called “We Gotta Live Together“. The song in it’s entirety is very groovy, but at about 6:05 in there’s a bar of groovy goodness that I just had to loop into a sample.  Digi drums, organ, and a driving orchestra section was added, along with a verse from “Combat”, a song off the Fight With Tools album by Flobots.  I tried my best but my rap skills definitely need some work.  🙂

This is my first real attempt at a hiphop loop, hoping to work on more sample tracks soon.  It’s available for download at our Soundcloud site here:

Mostly instrumental, so feel free to put your own spin on it and send it back!  We just might post it up!!!
