Exclusive New Release: Aqua Vista by Alexa Merrill

859710107017_cover.170x170-75When LA singer/songwriter Alexa Merrill stepped into
Blue House Records studios, we knew we had found a focused young woman with a clear musical vision. Aqua Vista, her latest EP released this Summer, was pre-recorded and produced by Merrill as a demo using GarageBand software. Merrill had composed 5 musically elaborate tracks, complete with string arrangements, intricate percussion patterns, powerful overdubbed guitars and vocal melodies that seemed to move flawlessly across a wide harmonic range. These exploratory compositions ranged in style from American Rock to elements of Indie and Folk Rock, Pop, Soul, and R&B, and carried heavy lyrical power with words surrounding many of the developmental and life changing experiences associated with today’s youth and young adults; transition, loss, relationships, and difficult life choices.

After months of work and many hours spent perfecting each track, we are proud to present Aqua Vista, the second EP from Alexa Merrill and a glimpse at what’s to come from this talented young musician. (Check out “Tracking Vocals” and “Tracking in Westwood, CA” for behind the scenes photos and information on the making of Aqua Vista.)

New Music Drop: Alt-J & Bad Suns

Two bands we’ve been digging lately: Alt-J, a british indie rock quartet, and Bad Suns, an alt rock group out of Los Angeles.

Alt-J, or simply gained our attention last month when they had an entire Coachella crowd grooving to their hit single “Breezeblocks“, a band that seems to perform as well on stage as they do in the studio, a rarity these days! The band has a massive following in Europe, and are catching fire in the U.S. with a growing social media following and increased radio play. Additionally, Alt-J are making headlines with recent success at London’s Ivor Novellos awards and even developing a new smartphone app, Soundhalo, which enables fans to download live music almost immediately post show. Pretty nifty! More importantly, they have proven that hit indie rock records can be made without cymbals… Thanks, @ThomSonny, guess I’ll just put my uber expensive set of Zildjians up on Ebay now. 🙂

Another solid jam brought to us by Alt-J:

LA band Bad Suns caught the attention of LA’s KROQ 106.7 with their demo track “Transpose“. The song ended up lasting nearly three months in the top five of their Locals Only program. We recently discovered Bad Suns via KROQ with their CRAZY catchy song “Cardiac Arrest“, the first single from their recording sessions with producer Eric Palmquist (Wavves, Aloe Blacc, Trash Talk). Keep an ear out for Bad Suns in the near future, they are currently working on their debut album.

Hendrix Sample Hip Hop Loop (We’ve Got To Live Together)

cd-cover_jimifillmoreIn the midst of a Hendrix jam out sesh the other night I stumbled upon the album Live at The Fillmore East.  Within this album is a tasty little jam called “We Gotta Live Together“. The song in it’s entirety is very groovy, but at about 6:05 in there’s a bar of groovy goodness that I just had to loop into a sample.  Digi drums, organ, and a driving orchestra section was added, along with a verse from “Combat”, a song off the Fight With Tools album by Flobots.  I tried my best but my rap skills definitely need some work.  🙂

This is my first real attempt at a hiphop loop, hoping to work on more sample tracks soon.  It’s available for download at our Soundcloud site here:

Mostly instrumental, so feel free to put your own spin on it and send it back!  We just might post it up!!!
